Monsanto has sued 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses

75-Year-Old Soybean Farmer Could Deal A Blow To Monsanto ’s Empire Today

Written by Aviva Shen

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a 75-year-old soybean farmer’s appeal against biotech giant Monsanto, in a case that could permanently reshape the genetically modified (GM) crop industry. Victor “Hugh” Bowman has been battling the corporation since 2007, when Monsanto sued him for violating their patent protection by purchasing second-generation GM seeds from a grain elevator. An appeals court ruled in favor of Monsanto, and despite the Obama administration’s urging to let the decision stand, the nine justices will hear Bowman make his case today.

Screen Shot 2013 02 20 at 9.13.15 AM1 Monsanto has sued 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses

Victor “Hugh” Bowman

Monsanto is notorious among farmers for the company’s aggressive investigations and pursuit of farmers they believe have infringed on Monsanto’s patents. In the past 13 years, Monsanto has sued 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses, almost always settling out of court (the few farmers that can afford to go to trial are always defeated). These farmers were usually sued for saving second-generation seeds for the next harvest — a basic farming practice rendered illegal because seeds generated by GM crops contain Monsanto’s patented genes.

Monsanto’s winning streak hinges on a controversial Supreme Court decision from 1981, which ruled on a 5-4 split that living organisms could be patented as private property. As a result of that decision, every new generation of GM seeds — and their self-replicating technology — is considered Monsanto’s property.

Unfortunately, second- and third-generation seeds are very hard to track, which may explain why Monsanto devotes $10 million a year and 75 staffers to investigating farmers for possible patent violations. Seeds are easily carried by birds or blown by the wind into fields of non-GM seeds, exposing farmers who have never bought seeds from Monsanto to lawsuits. Organic and conventional seeds are fast becoming extinct — 93 percent of soybeans, 88 percent of cotton, and 86 percent of corn in the US are grown from Monsanto’s patented seeds. A recent study discovered that at least half of the organic seeds in the US are contaminated with some genetically modified material.

Bowman’s appeal gives the Supreme Court an opportunity to determine whether or not Monsanto is using patent enforcement to control their monopoly on a vital resource. As GM seeds become more ubiquitous, farmers who want to avoid Monsanto’s strict patents have few alternatives. As a recently released Center for Food Safety report notes, the concentration of market power among Monsanto and a handful of other companies has led to skyrocketing seed prices and less innovation by smaller firms:

USDA data show that since the introduction of GE seed, the average cost of soybean seed to plant one acre has risen by a dramatic 325 percent, from $13.32 to $56.58. Similar trends exist for corn and cotton seeds: cotton seeds spiked 516 percent from 1995-2011 and corn seed costs rose 259 percent over the same period.

[...] USDA economists have found that seed industry consolidation has reduced research and likely resulted in fewer crop varieties on offer: “Those companies that survived seed industry consolidation appear to be sponsoring less research relative to the size of their individual markets than when more companies were involved… Also, fewer companies developing crops and marketing seeds may translate into fewer varieties offered.”

Furthermore, emerging evidence indicates that Monsanto has hardly perfected the technology. A core argument for GM seeds in the 1990s claimed they would reduce chemical pesticide use because the plants themselves would repel pests and weeds. But studies have confirmed the spread of so-called “superweeds” that have developed a resistance to Monsanto’s gene, leading farmers to deploy even heavier doses of herbicides like Monsanto’s own product, Roundup. Another new report debunked the company’s argument that GM seeds would have higher yields; in fact, two of Monsanto’s most popular genes caused yields to drop.

Despite the mounting evidence against their products, the biotech industry enjoys a cozy relationship with government regulators. In December, the Justice Department abruptly dropped their investigation into anti-competitive practices in the industry without so much as a press release. The stalled Farm Bill also contains generous provisions that would allow these companies to put their products on the market with cursory or no review by the USDA.

Today’s oral argument is a study in these intertwined interests: the Obama administration is presenting their own defense of Monsanto, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was once a Monsanto lawyer (but will not recuse himself from Bowman’s case). Still, the same high court that enabled the current state of American agriculture in 1981 now finds itself in a position to check Monsanto’s power — or help them tighten their hold on the industry.

Greenpeace—They say you can tell next season’s hottest trend by looking at the colour of the rivers in Mexico and China. That’s because global fashion brands like Calvin Klein, GAP and G-Star Raw are using hazardous chemicals and dyes to make our clothes. These chemicals poison our rivers, and traces of these hazardous chemicals also end up remaining in many of the garments people buy.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Around the world, a growing movement of people are calling on clothing brands to make fashion that doesn’t cost the Earth. More than 400,000 people have joined the campaign since November, resulting in the world’s largest fashion retailer, Zara, and the world’s largest jean manufacturer, Levi’s, to commit to clean-up their supply chain and products. True People Power in action.

The Effects of Pesticides in Food

The Effects of Pesticides in Food

The Effects of Pesticides in Food

By Lisa Garber Nation of Change

W hen asked by a skeptical friend why you buy organic, do you find yourself tongue-tied? Was it obesity? Or thyroid problems? Why should you buy organic? There are numerous reasons to skip the mainstream supermarket food and shop at an organic grocer, but just one of those reasons revolves around the effects of pesticides.

“Unfortunately, pesticides attack your body on several fronts.”
Keep this list handy the next time you find yourself wondering if you should buy a carton of conventional strawberries rather than organic to potentially save a few pennies. Remember that all of the following conditions will cost you much more than money; the effects of pesticides will cost you your health.

Here are 7 nasty and crazy effects of pesticides.

The Effects of Pesticides – Cancer

The dreaded diagnosis of cancer has been linked in over 260 studies worldwide to agrochemicals. Worse, scientists have linked pesticides with several types of cancers, including that of the breast, prostate, brain, bone, thyroid, colon, liver, lung, and more. Some researchers from USC found that “those who lived within 500 meters of places where methyl bromide, captan and eight other organochlorine pesticides had been applied, they found, were more likely to have developed prostate cancer.”

But even indirect exposure, such as through parental use, has been found to affect children in a terrible way. A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives has linked parental use of pesticides with an increased risk of brain cancer in children. “Parental exposures may act before the child’s conception, during gestation, or after birth to increase the risk of cancer,” the study said. And when the parents are exposed to the pesticides may also play a role in the different cellular changes that lead to cancer.

Obesity and Diabetes

obesity table The Effects of Pesticides in FoodBecause pesticides have also been linked to obesity, it’s logical that it would be connected to diabetes, in which obesity often has a role. Some researchers found a higher prevalence of obesity in the participants with high urinary concentrations of a pesticide known as 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP). It is important to note that 2,5-DCP is one of the most widely used pesticides on the globe.

Robert Sargis, MD, PhD, revealed his recent study findings at the Endocrine Society’s 94th Annual Meeting, stating that agricultural fungicide created insulin resistance in fat cells. The journalDiabetes Care published in 2011 that people with excess weight and high levels of organochlorine pesticides in their bodies had greater risk of becoming diabetic.

Parkinson’s Disease

Long-term exposure to herbicides and pesticides have been associated in over 60 studies with Parkinson’s. You don’t have to be a conventional farmer to be wary of these findings. Use natural methods to keep pests and weeds out of your home and garden today.

Infertility and Birth Defects

One of the most well-known negative effects of pesticides, infertility is continuously found to be a result of exposure to these agrochemicals. Atrazine—a weed killer used in agriculture as well as on golf courses and which has been found in tap water—may be partially responsible for climbing miscarriage and infertility rates. As for men, one 2006 study pinpointed chlorpyrifos with lowering testosterone levels. This pesticide is often found in strawberry fields and apple and peach orchards.

Other researchers tested roundup on mature male rats at a concentration range between 1 and 10,000 parts per million (ppm),and found that within 1 to 48 hours of exposure, testicular cells of the mature rats were either damaged or killed.

Avoid pesticides even if you’re already pregnant. These chemicals are responsible for causing various birth defects, too. A report revealed that the top selling herbicide Roundup disrupts male hormones due to the main active ingredient – glyphosate.

Autism

360 autism infertility 0518 The Effects of Pesticides in FoodAdmittedly, pesticides aren’t solely to blame for autism, but they may be a hefty part of the equation. Leading scientists are attributing the condition to genes and insecticides exposed to the mother while pregnant as well as to the child in early years.  This is because many chemicals affect the neurology of bugs, inadvertently affecting the neurological function of children, too. A 2010 Harvard study blames organophosphate pesticides—found in children’s urine—to ADHD.

What is the best way to to avoid pesticide exposure and pesticides in food? Don’t use pesticides, and buy organic. Organic isn’t always easy or cheap, so keep in mind these updated dirty dozen fruits and vegetables to always buy organic (plus 15 cleaner foods you can afford to buy conventional). NASA has also suggested raising air purifying plants indoors to clear your home of indoor air pollution. Remember to remove pesticides from your home, too.

Side effects of GMOs – Ask your doctor if CANCER is right for you

Side effects of GMOs - Ask your doctor if CANCER is right for you

Side effects of GMOs – Ask your doctor if CANCER is right for you.

by: S. D. Wells (Natural News)

Knowledge is power, and no person or organization can ever take it away from you. Remember that the body is the temple of the soul, so treat it that way. Otherwise, if you’re still considering a GMO food diet or regimen, be sure and ask your doctor if CANCER is right for you.

If I sprayed your salad with some “RAID” roach killer right now, just a little bit right on the lettuce and maybe a little more on the tomatoes, would you still eat it all, and just assume your body will simply filter out those “small amounts” of toxins? Better yet, what if I paid for it, a nice big, tasty, “bug killer” salad that you could even take outside and no bugs would bother you at all, would you eat it? How about this: If I sprayed a quick shot of some Raid ant killer into your orange juice or your apple juice right in front of you, would you drink it, especially if you’d save 25 cents on every drink you drank from now on? What if most vegetables, fruits, and fruit juice drinks were sold that way, and cheaper than the “Non-Raid” food, would you still buy them? Wouldn’t that pay off for you in the long run? I guess not, because you’re not stupid, are you?

What if the NUMBER ONE SIDE EFFECT of your medication was CANCER, would you still take it, just to temporarily make that headache go away, or maybe to make a little muscle ache disappear for a few hours? GMO means food and medicine are genetically modified, with bacteria and sometimes with viruses, or with weed killer, worm killer, bug killer and people killer. “Pesticide food” is well planned out and has been for decades. Let’s look at history for proof.

Six largest pesticide corporations paying to defeat Prop 37

Six largest pesticide corporations paying to defeat Prop 37

Six largest pesticide corporations funding effort to defeat GMO labeling Prop 37

by: J. D. Heyes (NaturalNews)

In what should probably surprise no one who has been following the Proposition 37 issue, a California proposal that would require the ingredients in all GM foods to be labeled, the so-called “Big 6″ pesticide corporations have become the movement’s main opponents.

Filings released this week by the California Secretary of State’s office denote that the world’s six largest pesticide corporations have become the six biggest contributors to opponents of Prop 37. In all, they have funneled in excess of $20 million to oppose the measure which, again, would require what should already be happening: the labeling of genetically engineered or modified food. The money has especially funded an aggressive, extensive ad campaign in recent weeks.

“Pesticide corporations like Monsanto continue to enjoy unfettered and unlabeled access to the market, while consumers are left largely in the dark,” said Marcia Ishii-Eiteman, PhD, senior scientist at Pesticide Action Network. “Despite the best efforts of the big six to confuse and distort the issue, Californians have a right to know what’s in their food and how it’s grown.”

The Big 6 – Monsanto, BASF, Bayer, Dow, DuPont and Syngenta – far and away dominate the global seed and pesticide markets; they are actively opposing Prop 37. In filings released recently, each of the corporations “made contributions of at least $2 million, with Monsanto’s contribution alone totaling more than $7 million,” said PAN, in a press release.

What do the Big 6 have to hide?

The opposition really wants Prop. 37 defeated. Including Big 6 donations, so far those committed to defeating it have ponied up in excess of $37 million; they’ve spent $19 million with Sacramento public relations firms and on aggressive television advertising and paid mailings to voters.

But why? Why are companies so opposed to openness and honesty when it comes to allowing consumers the right to know what’s in the GM foods they are buying?

The answer may lie in a comprehensive study released a week ago. According to Dr. Charles Benbrook, who conducted the study using federal government data, the Big 6 likely don’t want you to know that genetically engineered crops drive up the use of dangerous pesticides while they open more markets for them as well (as usual, “follow the money”).

Benbrook found that GM crops have “increased pesticide use by over 400 million pounds in the United States over the past fifteen years,” said the PAN statement.

“Increased pesticide use has led to greater and greater weed resistance. In turn, this has led to more applications of pesticides – as well as use of more hazardous pesticides – in agricultural fields, putting rural communities and farm workers at the greatest risk of harm due to pesticide exposure,” the activist organization said.

More pesticides, more chemicals, more danger

In addition to the use of more pesticides, the control over seeds has also benefited these giant biotech companies – at the expense, of course, of consumers.

“The Big 6 chemical and seed companies are working diligently to monopolize the food system at the expense of consumers, farmers and smaller seed companies,” said Philip H. Howard, an associate professor at Michigan State University and an expert on industry consolidation.

In all, Monsanto alone controls 23 percent of the world’s seed market, while Bayer controls 20 percent of the global pesticide market.

So what’s the big deal, really? Why should GM foods be labeled anyhow?

Probably the biggest reason why is because GMOs – genetically modified organisms – in general were not created by food or agriculture companies. They were created by Monsanto – the same biotech and chemical company that brought us DDT, PCBs and Agent Orange. Monsanto also marketed aspartame and created bovine growth hormone (rBGH) to infect milking cows that put pus into commercial milk.

That’s what the big deal is.

The Forbidden Cancer Cures

The Forbidden Cancer Cures

The Forbidden Cancer Cures

In the last 100 years dozens of doctors, scientists and researchers have come up with the most diverse, apparently effective solutions against cancer, but none of these was ever taken into serious consideration by official medicine. Most of them were in fact rejected out-front, even though healings were claimed in the thousands, their proposers often being labeled as charlatans, ostracized by the medical community and ultimately forced to leave the country. At the same time more than 20,000 people die of cancer every day, without official medicine being able to offer a true sense of hope to those affected by it. Why?

If people actually worked to promote the common good, as opposed to promoting their own selfish motives, there might be more hope for those with cancer today. ~Massimo Mazzucco
This is the story of Essiac, Hoxsey, Laetrile, Shark Cartilage, Mistletoe, and Bicarbonate of Soda all put together in a stunning overview that leaves no doubt that inexpensive cures for cancer do exist but are systematically blocked by Big Pharma because they come from nature and cannot be patented.

This is not to say that doctors do not detect genuine cancer in many people. If the statistics are true then we have a real epidemic on our hands. Two questions arise. Firstly, why are so many people dying from this condition and secondly, what are the options for people who receive a cancer diagnosis. ~Massimo Mazzucco

The Gerson Therapy — A Natural Cure for Cancer

The Gerson Therapy — A Natural Cure for Cancer

The Gerson Therapy — A Natural Cure for Cancer

My Health Insurance is Organic Food ~Howard Straus

Max Gerson was a German physician who developed the Gerson Therapy, an alternative dietary therapy, which has been proven to cure cancer and most chronic, degenerative diseases. The Gerson Therapy is based on the belief that disease is caused by the accumulation of unspecified toxins, and attempts to treat the disease by having patients consume a vegetarian diet including hourly glasses of organic juice and various dietary supplements. Gerson’s daughter, Charlotte Gerson, continued to promote the therapy, founding the “Gerson Institute” in 1977.

Howard Straus, grandson of Max Gerson and son of Charlotte Gerson, first began using his grandfather’s Gerson Therapy to cure his hereditary enema: thalassemia. His mother founded the Gerson Institute, and he had always been involved in some manner. That was how he discovered that natural treatment could cure cancer.

Screen Shot 2012 10 17 at 8.37.14 PM The Gerson Therapy — A Natural Cure for Cancer

Howard Straus

At the age of 23, he was engaged to be married, but three months before the wedding, his fiancée came down with her third occurrence of skin cancer. She started the Gerson Therapy. Straus explains how successful the treatment was: “We both went on the therapy and all my little health problems started to go away. I lost 50 unwanted pounds, my adult acne cleared up and my hair started growing back. This was 23 years ago—look at me now, I’m almost 70 and I’m in the best health of my life, which is something that few American men can say at this age. My wife is in the best health ever and to this day is cancer free.”

The basics of Gerson Therapy consist of organic, salt free, fat free, vegan nutrition with the addition of detoxification and vitamin, mineral, and enzyme supplementation. At the clinic, three large vegan meals are provided per day with a wide variety of fresh pressed vegetable and fruit juices. All these tenants serve to restore everything the body lacks.

A Distinctive Style, a Digital Media Magazine is Celebrating 5 Years

Our Digital Media Magazine is Celebrating 5 Years and 20 Issues!

This month marks the 20th Anniversary issue of A Distinctive Style (ADS) magazine.  We are proud what we’ve accomplished over the past five years and wish to thank our readers, followers and supporters and those created the innovative tool which has allowed A Distinctive Style magazine a platform to showcase our stories.

ADS began as a medium to highlight environmental issues, but merged beautifully into a gallery for artists, a stage for musicians, a platform for celebrities who do more than entertain us, and a lesson in tenacity through the many stories we’ve covered.

Screen Shot 2012 10 06 at 7.22.46 PM A Distinctive Style, a Digital Media Magazine is Celebrating 5 Years

Five Year Anniversary

Fran Drescher (a.k.a “the Nanny”) was featured in two ADS issues as she educated us about the early warning signs of cancer…pay attention to your body: Stage 1 is the cure!

Actress and singer Olivia Newton-John shared her story of cancer during a candid interview, reminding us all of how we have an inner strength that can pull us through anything.

Actress Diane Keaton brought us her new book “Then Again,” a leveling story of the “all American” family and how our own family stories are not so different from hers.

And when “Dallas” finally made its way back to network television we were elated to have the opportunity to cover the Red Carper affair, and interview some of the cast.

We are each teachers in our own way. We wish each of you experience greatness so you can teach/help others. Looking back on the ADS journey it seems that a deeper lesson was there for us… a lesson intending on reminding us of the possibilities we each hold within us. No matter what life gives you, there are lessons in the highs and lows. What emerges is a bigger, better, stronger YOU!

We hope ADS has given you an inspiring look at the world and how YOU are an integral part of the future. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life.

Everyone must Stand Up to Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C)

A groundbreaking initiative created to accelerate innovative cancer research that will get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.

SU2C is bringing together the best and the brightest researchers and encouraging collaboration instead of competition among the entire cancer community. By galvanizing the entertainment industry, SU2C creates awareness and builds broad public support for this effort.

Here we stand, on the verge of unlocking the answers that will finally conquer cancer.

Cancer takes one person every minute. One life in a moment. They are our brothers, our sisters, our fathers and mothers, our husbands and wives, our best friends, our children, ourselves. Every day in America 1500 people die despite the fact that the means to save them are literally within our reach. To wait any longer for someone else to save our lives and the lives of those we love is unforgivable.  We must act now.

For the first time in history, we can envision the possibility of stopping cancer in its tracks.  Now more than ever, as government funding for cancer research is disappearing from the national agenda, every single one of us affected by cancer must stand up and be heard.

How?

Proof that the cancer industry doesn’t want a cure for cancer

Proof that the cancer industry doesn't want a cure for cancer

The cancer industry doesn’t want a cure for cancer

by PF Louis

(NaturalNews) A safe and effective cure for cancer has been discovered with a drug that was once used for unusual metabolic problems. Yet, the cancer industry shows no interest with following up on dichloroacetate (DCA) research from University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, reported in 2007. That’s because DCA is no longer patented. (1)

Alternative cancer therapies have little or no problem with metastatic cancer or even cancer reoccurring after remission. Most alternative cancers simply cure cancers completely.
That research also confirmed cancer as a metabolic malfunction, not a weird mutation of cells often explained away as a genetic issue. But the medical mafia doesn’t want you to hear about it. But it confirms what most alternative cancer therapists already know.

Since Nixon declared the “war on cancer” in the 1970s, the cancer industry has succeeded with raising money for researching very expensive chemo substances at $50,000 to $100,000 per round or more for toxic therapies that rarely work. (2)

Chemo drugs usually lead to demanding more business with drugs to ease terrible side effects (http://www.naturalnews.com/034761_cancer_drugs_toxicity_Voraxaze.html). Meanwhile, more are getting cancer and more are dying from it, mostly because of the toxic treatments.

Explaining DCA research results

Evangelos Michelakis and the Alberta University research team tested DCA on human cancer cells outside the body and in cancerous mice with profound success. DCA was once used for unusual metabolic disorders. The worst side effects, which rarely occur, include some numbness and an affected gait.

The mice were fed DCA in water, and in weeks they had remarkable tumor shrinkage. This indicates DCA can be taken orally. DCA works by restoring the cells’ mitochondria. Michelakis and his team had discovered that the mitochondria in cancer cells are not permanently damaged and irreparable. This is what mainstream medicine thinks.

With mitochondria malfunctioning, cancer cells use glucose fermentation for survival energy. This fermentation occurs when glycolysis (glucose conversion) occurs in an anaerobic cellular environment, which can be created by benign tumor masses, toxins, and low pH levels.

DCA restores mitochondria in cells to make them function properly. Another function of normal mitochondria is signaling apoptosis, or cellular self destruction. Normal cells die and become replaced constantly. But with cancer cells, the apoptosis signal is nullified, making cancer cells “immortal.” (3)

The Alberta University researchers also realized that glycolysis fermentation in cancer cells produces lactic acid. The lactic acid breaks down the collagen holding those cells together in a tumor. This allows cancer cells to easily break away from a tumor shrinking with mainstream therapies.

The researchers reasoned this is why cancer metastasizes or spreads to different parts of the body or reappears after remission from chemo.

Tragic hypocrisy

Alternative cancer therapies have little or no problem with metastatic cancer or even cancer reoccurring after remission. Most alternative cancers simply cure cancers completely.

DCA offers the cancer industry an opportunity to come up with a pharmaceutical cure that is much cheaper and safer than their current standard of care. Yet the cancer industry is ignoring this opportunity. Instead, DCA is a homeless orphan begging for research funds to avoid legal issues with off label use on cancer. (4)

Alternative cancer practitioners have always simply tried out and when they succeeded shared them with others who cared more about healing than money and power.

The medical mafia has created a matrix that demands big bucks to make big bucks for sick care instead of curing. Everyone in on the scam makes out financially. The cancer industry accuses alternative cancer therapists of quackery and taking advantage of the desperately ill for financial gain. Accusing others of your motives and crimes is called projection.

The medical/pharmaceutical complex is crony capitalism that doesn’t want a cure for cancer from anywhere.

When Healing Becomes a Crime:

The Amazing Story of the Hoxsey Cancer Clinics and the Return of Alternative Therapies

In 1924, Harry Hoxsey claimed a cure for cancer, herbal formulas inherited from his great-grandfather. Thousands of patients swore the treatment cured them; but the medical authorities branded Hoxsey the worst quack of the century. So began a medical war continuing to this day.

Hoxsey’s alarming scenario may make you angry, but most of all, Hoxsey offers hope.
By the 1950′s Hoxsey’s Texas clinic was the world’s largest, with branches in 17 states. Two Federal courts upheld his treatment’s “therapeutic value.” Even his archenemy, the American Medical Association, admitted it does cure some cases. Yet organized medicine banned the therapy, exiling it to Mexico where it claims an 80% success rate today.

Why won’t medical authorities investigate the treatment? Hoxsey charged a “conspiracy” to suppress alternative therapies. Was Hoxsey a hoax? Or was he “The Quack Who Cured Cancer”?

The award-winning tale of medical politics and systematic suppression of a promising alternative health therapy by the institutions charged with preserving our nation’s health.

The Hoxsey Therapy

Hoxsey asks for an investigation

The Hoxsey Therapy, a mixture of herbs, was first marketed as a purported cure for cancer in the 1920s by Harry Hoxsey, a former coal miner and insurance salesman. Hoxsey himself traced the treatment to his great-grandfather, who observed a horse with a tumor on its leg cure itself by grazing upon wild plants growing in the meadow. John Hoxsey gathered these herbs and mixed them with old home remedies used for cancer, Among the claims made in his book, he purports his therapy aims to restore “physiological normalcy” to a disturbed metabolism throughout the body, with emphasis on purgation, to help carry away wastes from the tumors he believed his herbal mixtures caused to necrotize.

Hoxsey initially opened a clinic in Taylorville, Illinoisto sell his treatment, one of 17 clinics that he would eventually open. Dogged in many states by legal trouble for practicing medicine without a license, Hoxsey frequently shut down his clinics and reopened them in new locations. In 1936, Hoxsey opened a clinic in Dallas, Texaswhich became one of the largest privately owned cancer centers in the world. At one point in the 1950s, Hoxsey’s gross annual income reached $1.5 million from the treatment of 8,000 patients.

The Gerson Miracle – A Proven Cancer Cure

The Gerson Miracle – A Proven Cancer Cure

In 1928, Dr. Max Gerson, a German-Jewish researcher, stumbled upon a therapy that has cured tens of thousands of people worldwide since then, including patients’s previously thought incurable by their doctors. For the first time, this film chronicles the epic true story of Gerson’s miracle.

‘The Gerson Miracle’ introduces us to the physician who developed The Gerson Therapy more than 75 years ago, a therapy that has proven to cure cancer and most other chronic and degenerative diseases. Through his own painful struggle with migraines, Dr. Max Gerson conceived a treatment based entirely on nutrition and the body’s own ability to heal itself. He cured his migraines and summarily concentrated on other methods that prove to naturally boost the immune system this is the real miracle.

‘The Gerson Miracle’ introduces us to the physician who developed The Gerson Therapy more than 75 years ago, a therapy that has proven to cure cancer and most other chronic and degenerative diseases.
Nine current and former patients speak passionately about their successful recoveries from the most deadly cancers. Their first-person recovery stories are the greatest testament to the therapy’s efficacy. And it is through Dr. Gerson’s daughter, Charlotte, that the therapy is still alive in the face of almost insurmountable opposition from the American Medical Association and most major pharmaceutical companies. This film offers a path to a healthier life, in tune with our bodies and environment, not in conflict with them.

ABOUT MAX GERSON

Max Gerson, M.D. was born in Wongrowitz, Germany (1881). He attended the universities of Breslau, Wuerzburg, Berlin, and Freiburg. Suffering from severe migraines, Dr. Gerson focused his initial experimentation with diet on preventing his headaches. One of Dr. Gerson’s patients discovered in the course of his treatment, that the “migraine diet” had cured his skin tuberculosis. This discovery led Gerson to further study the diet, and he went on to successfully treat many tuberculosis patients. His work eventually came to the attention of famed thoracic surgeon, Ferdinand Sauerbruch, M.D.

Under Sauerbruch’s supervision, Dr. Gerson established a special skin tuberculosis treatment program at the Munich University Hospital. In a carefully monitored clinical trial, 446 out of 450 skin tuberculosis patients treated with the Gerson diet recovered completely. Dr. Sauerbruch and Dr. Gerson simultaneously published articles in a dozen of the world’s leading medical journals, establishing the Gerson treatment as the first cure for skin tuberculosis.

At this time, Dr. Gerson attracted the friendship of Nobel prize winner Albert Schweitzer, M.D., by curing Schweitzer’s wife of lung tuberculosis after all conventional treatments had failed. Gerson and Schweitzer remained friends for life, and maintained regular correspondence. Dr. Schweitzer followed Gerson’s progress as the dietary therapy was successfully applied to heart disease, kidney failure, and finally – cancer. Schweitzer’s own Type II diabetes was cured by treatment with Gerson’s therapy.

In 1938, Dr. Gerson passed his boards and was licensed to practice in the state of New York. For twenty years, he treated hundreds of cancer patients who had been given up to die after all conventional treatments had failed.

A Cancer Therapy: Results of 50 Cases

In 1946, Gerson demonstrated recovered patients before the Pepper-Neely Congressional Subcommittee, during hearings on a bill to fund research into cancer treatment. Although only a few peer-reviewed journals were receptive to Gerson’s then “radical” idea that diet could affect health, he continued to publish articles on his therapy and case histories of healed patients.

In 1958, after thirty years of clinical experimentation, Gerson published A Cancer Therapy: Results of 50 Cases. This medical monograph details the theories, treatment, and results achieved by a great physician. Gerson died in 1959, eulogized by long-time friend, Albert Schweitzer M.D.:

…I see in him one of the most eminent geniuses in the history of medicine. Many of his basic ideas have been adopted without having his name connected with them. Yet, he has achieved more than seemed possible under adverse conditions. He leaves a legacy which commands attention and which will assure him his due place. Those whom he has cured will now attest to the truth of his ideas.

Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless

You can read the full story of Dr. Max Gerson’s life and the development of the Gerson Therapy in his biography, Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless, written by his grandson, Howard Straus. Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless discusses the development of his world-famous dietary therapy and the struggles this medical pioneer faced as he challenged orthodox medicine with his nutritional protocol. This inspiring and uplifting biography follows Dr. Gerson through Nazi persecution, then persecution in the United States from the medical establishment, the continuation of his work despite the opposition, his questionable death and finally the present, where daughter Charlotte Gerson and the Gerson Institute work to continue his legacy and vision.

Fruit Tree Said to Kill Cancer Cells

Fruit Tree Said to Kill Cancer Cells

Kill Cancer Cells with Matomoko…

Although Ukambani might be dry most of the year and food is scarce in this area, the people of Ukambani are blessed with other things that are not found in most other places. There are so many valuable trees that have different benefits and local people depend on those trees in their day to day life. One of these tree that are beneficial is the annona fruit  tree. Extracts from a fruit tree  have shown dramatic success in killing cancerous cells in the lung, breast, prostate, colon, liver, ovarian, cervical, breast, bladder and skin. The annona tree family has over 110 species mostly growing in the wild with the main ones being Annona muricata found in the Amazon rainforest and the Annona cherimola, which is grown locally and known as matomoko

A close relative of a well-known fruit tree found in Ukambani, Taita and Voi could hold the key to a cure for some of the world’s untreatable cancers.

Screen Shot 2012 07 23 at 9.49.38 AM Fruit Tree Said to Kill Cancer CellsCommonly known as soursop or custard apple, the plant belonging to the Annona species has shown dramatic success in destroying lung, breast, prostate, colon, liver, ovarian, cervical, breast, bladder and skin cancerous cells.

Laboratory studies funded by the United States government through the National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Health and carried out by Purdue University show that a chemical compound in the plant selectively kills cancerous cells, leaving healthy ones unscathed.

The most dramatic is a recent study by the Catholic University of South Korea and published in the Journal of Natural Products showing that an extract from the plant was 10,000 times more effective in killing colon cancer cells than the drug currently in use.

The Annona tree family has over 110 species mostly growing in the wild in many parts of the world, with the main ones being Annona muricata found in the Amazon rainforest and the Annona cherimola, which is found locally and is commonly known as matomoko.

The tomoko fruits that grow in the drier parts of the country are much smaller compared to recent hybrids that grow in higher areas in parts of Murang’a and Kirinyaga, in Central Kenya.

Mainly because of its abundance in the Amazon rainforest and proximity to major research institutions in the US, the Amazonian variety has received the biggest share of academic research and commercial attention.

Because of this attention, the Amazonian Annona has spawned a global commercial brand, Graviola, which is being traded in many parts of the world as a health supplement.

The supplements, which are readily available on the Internet, are touted as the ultimate cure for a host of ailments. The herbalists say that if the fruit is crushed and mixed with pomegranate (Punica granatum) and other herbs, it can be administered as a cancer treatment.

Why?

If people, actually worked to promote the common good, as opposed to promoting their own selfish motives, there might be more hope for those with cancer today.

Tomatillo plants shows promise in cancer treatment

Tomatillo plants shows promise in cancer treatment

Study Finds that Wild Tomatillo Plants May help Fight Cancer

A multidisciplinary research team from the University of Kansas (KU) has made a pioneering discovery in the realm of natural, plant-based cancer treatments. Preliminary findings published in the Journal of Natural Products (JNP) reveal that wild tomatillo (Physalis longifolia), a weed commonly found throughout the midwestern Great Plains and in other areas of North America, possesses at least 14 unique anti-cancer compounds that could one day change the way doctors approach cancer treatment.

During a bioprospecting project in South America back in the 1990s, Barbara Timmermann, a medicinal chemist and co-director of KU’s Native Medicinal Plant Research Program, made an interesting discovery. A plant native to that particular region turned out to contain anti-cancer compounds, which prompted Timmermann, whose work involves identifying plants with medicinal properties, to search out ways to investigate it further.

But because of cost, distance, and other physical and financial barriers, Timmermann was never able to return to South America to perform the necessary analyses and finish her research. So she reportedly joined up with Kelly Kindscher, a senior scientist at the Kansas Biological Survey, to look for similar plants in the American Midwest. And much to their surprise, wild tomatillo turned out not only to contain the compound in question, but also to possess even more anti-cancer compounds than the original South American plant.

“Our research led us to Physalis longifolia, which is a fairly common plant throughout the Midwest,” said Timmerman. “And from there, we discovered not only the molecule we were seeking, but also the 14 new compounds, most of which have turned out to be even more potent than the original one we were looking for. Discovery is a beautiful thing when it happens like that.”

Animal trials show wild tomatillo can effectively mitigate, cure cancer

Screen Shot 2012 07 07 at 5.22.39 PM Tomatillo plants shows promise in cancer treatmentAfter first identifying wild tomatillo, Timmerman and Kindscher sought the help of Dr. Mark Cohen, a surgical oncologist and translational clinician scientist at the KU Medical Center, to analyze the plant. The three successfully identified the 14 compounds in question, known as withanolides, which in animal trials have already been shown to both fight and eradicate cancer cells.

According to Dr. Cohen’s laboratory analysis, these 14 compounds target melanomas, thyroid cancer, head and neck squamous cell cancer, breast cancer, glioblastoma brain tumors, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and certain leukemias. When fed wild tomatillo, test mice with these and other cancers saw their tumors shrink drastically, and in some cases even completely dissolve, without any negative side effects or noticeable toxicity.

The breakthrough findings are so significant, in fact, that Timmerman and her team’s work was featured at the recent University Research & Entrepreneurship Symposium in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The event is an exclusive, invite-only showcase of the nation’s most promising new university-based technologies for industry leaders, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs (http://www.universitysymposium.com/).

“We’re excited by the preliminary results,” added Timmermann. “While our research is still in the early stages, we’re optimistic that some of these 14 molecules could lead to new plant-based drugs or dietary supplements.”

Currently, wild tomatillo extracts, powders, and supplements are not widely or commercially available to the public. But as research on wild tomatillo continues to emerge, it is expected that wild tomatillo products might soon hit the market in the form of all-natural, food-based supplements.

Angelos Battle with Cancer

Angelos Battle with Cancer

Angelos Battle with Cancer began … It’s amazing how life changes

Family and friends of the Ballestero family are uniting to raise money to help with little Angelo’s battle with cancer.

It’s amazing how life changes. One moment sitting at my dining room table, laughing, eating some great Italian food, enjoying time with my dear friend Shelly Ballestero and the next I received the most devastating call. The very painful journey had begun.

Shelly had left the next day to go back to her home in Orlando and in one moment her life, the life of her family and the life of little Angelo’s, would be changed forever. What Shelly thought would be normal “growing pains”, turned out to be what every mother would dread and fear hearing…CANCER. Specifically diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a cancerous (malignant) bone tumor, little Angelo would undergo surgery only weeks later to amputate above his left knee. Angelo is the only one in the USA with his combo condition of Osteo and bone marrow failure, which has made it difficult to treat. We are praying he will not have to undergo a bone marrow transplant which is on the table now…Several top hospitals in the US are on his case and he is in the medical journals as well. This precious child wants to walk again, and won’t be fitted for a prosthetic leg for a few more months, it breaks his heart to have lost his leg and is seen as ‘different’. He sill has a few more months of chemo…prayers are needed!

Shelly and her husband Angelo are two of the dearest people I know. Shelly has always been a huge giver and cared for so many others and now she needs us to care for her and her beautiful family. Please, please give something. Every dollar counts. They have tons of needs as you can imagine. Not only do they have Angelo to care for, but after years of not being able to get pregnant, they found out they will be having a baby boy later this year. The medical bills are piling up and now they will have more to contend with. They are also in desperate need of transportation.

CBS Morning Show Spotlights “Agent Orange Corn,” The Toxic Corn That Our Government Might Be Approving

Written by Max Goldberg

In case you are new to this specific genetically-engineered corn, here is a quick recap of what it is and why you should be very, very alarmed that our government is close to approving it.

Genetically-modified food not only poses very serious health risks, pollutes our water supply, and presents an existential threat to organic food, but it has created a monster called superweeds.

Advocacy groups, such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, have cited numerous studies linking 2,4-D exposure to serious illnesses and cancers, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Superweeds, as profiled in the New York Times, are weeds that have become resistant to the ubiquitous herbicide RoundUp, grow uncontrollably, and now infect 13 million acres of land throughout the U.S.

How to deal with this?

Screen Shot 2012 06 13 at 7.53.59 PM 300x233 “Agent Orange Corn,” Toxic Corn That Our Government Might ApproveThe chemical and biotech industries say that the only solution to kill the superweeds is to throw more toxic chemicals at the problem. So, what they have proposed is a genetically-engineered corn that is resistant to 2,4-D. (They’ll plant this genetically-engineered corn and spray it with 2,4-D, with the goal of killing the weeds that grow around the corn but not kill the corn itself.)

2,4-D was the primary ingredient in Agent Orange, the herbicide warfare program in Vietnam that killed an estimated 400,000 people and caused 500,000 kids to be born with birth defects.

Advocacy groups, such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, have cited numerous studies linking 2,4-D exposure to serious illnesses and cancers, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

I have written in previous posts about the absolute insanity of this proposed GE-corn, and the Obama administration is close to approving it.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1) Tell the EPA that we do not want this very toxic chemical sprayed on our precious land. While the USDA directly controls the fate of 2,4-D, the EPA also assesses whether and how 2,4-D should be sprayed if these new crops are approved by USDA.

Click HERE and tell the EPA that we do not want 2,4-D.

2) Get involved, donate money, and spread the word about the California ballot initiative to label GMOs.

Why?

Right now, we are the only developed country in the world not to label GMOs. If we can make the labeling of GMOs mandatory:

  • the demand for GM-food will drop.
  • the demand for organic will surge.
  • toxic pesticide use will decrease, thus making our water supply cleaner.

In California, citizens – instead of politicians and bureaucrats – will be voting on this issue later this fall and if California approves this measure, other states will most likely do the same.

Please read this post about the California ballot initiative and consider donating money.

I have read that the major chemical and seed companies have committed to spend $60 million to kill this proposed measure.

3) Sign up for Just Label It, the federal campaign headed by Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg, and tell the FDA to make GMO-labeling mandatory.

These transgenic methods for moving genes around are also called “genetic engineering,” or GE.

This relatively new science allows DNA (genetic material) from one species to be transferred into another species, creating transgenic organisms with combinations of genes from plants, animals, bacteria, and even viral gene pools. The mixing of genes from different species that have never shared genes in the past is what makes GMOs and GE crops so unique. It is impossible to create such transgenic organisms through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Prostate Cancer

How do you know when your new cancer drug is working better than expected? When they shut down the clinical trial so that every participating patient can receive it.

Johnson & Johnson’s Zytiga is kind of a big deal. The FDA approved its use last year for advanced prostate cancer patients who had already received chemo but whose cancer had still metastasized. Prostate cancer is typically treatable for the 200,000 American men who contract it annually, as long as it is caught before it spreads. Once it does, the cancer typically goes to bones where it becomes resistant to normal testosterone-blocking hormonal therapies. Zytiga, however, is a unique cancer-fighting compound that penetrates cancerous cells and shuts down its testosterone production—quickly killing off the damaged cells and preventing their spread. What’s more, Zytiga remains effective after the cancer metastasizes and other drugs lose their punch.

Screen Shot 2012 06 05 at 9.20.51 AM Science May Have Just Beaten Prostate Cancer

What the new study from the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center—presented yesterday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting in Chicago—shows is that Zytiga can be prescribed much earlier in the disease’s progression, specifically before metastasization, with incredible results.

1,088 prostate cancer patients in 12 countries participated in the trial. Each man received the standard low-dose prednisone treatment, with half also getting Zytiga and the other receiving a placebo. Researchers almost immediately discovered that, in the Zytiga group, the cancer progressed at only half the speed as the control group, with patients reporting significantly less pain and a noticeable delay before they had to undertake chemo. The results are so stupendous that the trial was cancelled to allow every patient access to the drug.

“After that first bottle, my pain went away and I just felt like my life was turning around,” Rodolfo Chavez, 83, a former longshoreman from San Pedro told SFGate. “I’m still taking them. I’m on my 10th bottle and supposed to get another bottle today.”

The FDA has yet to approve Zytiga for earlier use and won’t do so until at least next year when the study’s final results are published but this could be a beacon for late-stage prostate cancer patients who have otherwise run out of treatment options. [SFGate - Image: Lightspring/Shutterstock]

America’s so-called War on Cancer

America's so-called War on Cancer

America’s so-called War on Cancer

Despite over $2.7 trillion spent on research and treatment, 14,800,000 Americans have died from cancer since 1971. In 2009 alone, 565,000 – or 1,548 people every day – lost their lives to the dreaded disease. And in the next 3 years, more individuals will die from cancer than ALL the U.S. soldier deaths from EVERY war since the American Revolution. What’s going on?

Cut Poison Burn is a searing film that illuminates the grim truth about America’s so-called War on Cancer. This thought-provoking documentary takes on the forces that have conspired to thwart meaningful advances in cancer research and treatment over the past century. These forces include the federal government (in its effort to label and persecute innovators as quacks), drug companies eager to suppress alternative treatments and powerful industry organizations that place profit over human lives. The story centers on the Navarros, a family struggling to keep their young son alive. The war between the Navarro Family and the FDA is perhaps this country’s greatest evidence as to why there should be medical freedom. As the personal meets the political, we see how the FDA holds a vise-like grip on treatment options. Heart-wrenching and informative, the film ultimately expresses hope that we can create a new paradigm of prevention, medical freedom and acceptance of highly-tailored therapies to usher in a more enlightened era. Over 12 years, 150 hours of footage and interviews with top oncologists, researchers, policy-makers, homeopaths and patients carry the story and reveal that we are on the brink of disaster and in desperate need of reform.

In the watered-down language of political correctness, the warning is still quite strong. As his website says: (http://www.wyden.senate.gov/news/press-releases/after-tour-of-fukushi…)

Wyden’s principal concern is the relocation of spent fuel rods currently being stored in unsound structures immediately adjacent to the ocean. He strongly urged the Ambassador to accept international help to prevent dangerous nuclear material from being released into the environment.

He then went on to say, in his own words: (emphasis added)

The scope of damage to the plants and to the surrounding area was far beyond what I expected and the scope of the challenges to the utility owner, the government of Japan, and to the people of the region are daunting. The precarious status of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear units and the risk presented by the enormous inventory of radioactive materials and spent fuel in the event of further earthquake threats should be of concern to all and a focus of greater international support and assistance.”

His website goes on to say something that should stun anyone who understands the threat of radioactive contamination of the environment:

The U.S. government plays a similar mind game, raising the allowable levels of radiation exposure by thousands of times and then declaring Fukushima fallout to be suddenly safe!
“Wyden found that the facilities designed to house spent nuclear fuel and the reactors themselves were still in a state of disrepair and located in areas that would make them susceptible to further damage from future seismic events. The reactor buildings still contain large amounts of spent fuel — making them a huge safety risk and the only protection from a future tsunami, Wyden observed, is a small, makeshift sea wall erected out of bags of rock.”

Did you catch that last part? The only protection from a tsunami is a “makeshift sea wall erected out of bags or rock.”

And to think, the fate of the world now depends on us all just “lucking out” and crossing our fingers in the hope that no earthquake or tsunami takes place before they clean up the Fukushima facility mess.

Which brings up the question: What exactly is being done to clean up the Fukushima facility mess?

In a word, nothing.

Governments play pretend

Virtually nothing is happening. All the governments involved (Japan and USA, primarily) are playing a ridiculously stupid game of pretending there is no problem. The Japanese government, for its part, has decided that instead of admitted to a radiation problem, it’s easier to just tell Japanese citizens they have a mental disorder if they’re concerned about radiation (http://www.prisonplanet.com/fear-of-radiation-treated-as-psychiatric-…).

The U.S. government plays a similar mind game, raising the allowable levels of radiation exposure by thousands of times and then declaring Fukushima fallout to be suddenly safe! (http://www.naturalnews.com/031963_radiation_exposure.html)

Governments, in other words, are in denial mode even while Fukushima smolders and hurls us all toward irreversible global disaster.

If Fukushima were a “terrorist,” the U.S. government would stop at nothing to defeat it…

Wild tomatillo plant could be key to cancer fighting treatments

Cancer Fighting Treatments

Chemists in the laboratory of Barbara Timmermann, who heads the medicinal chemistry side of our program,
have discovered 14 compounds new to science in Physalis longifolia, or wild tomatillo, a plant native to Kansas.
Four of the compounds have shown potent cytotoxity against specific types of cancer.
These findings have led to two published papers, with more forthcoming.
We will continue to pursue this research. ~Physalis research

To the casual observer, the wild tomatillo is just your everyday, run-of-the-mill weed…

But to University of Kansas scientists Barbara Timmermann, Kelly Kindscher and Mark Cohen, this common North American plant might be the key to a new line of cancer-fighting treatments based on molecules present in nature.

The three KU researchers have discovered 14 new compounds in the wild tomatillo that are showing significant anti-cancer properties in preclinical testing. The new compounds, known as withanolides, are already showing promise in combating a number of different cancers and tumors – without any noticeable side effects or toxicity.

“We’re excited by the preliminary results,” said Timmermann, a medicinal chemist and co-director of KU’s Native Medicinal Plant Research Program, which comprises scientists from various KU departments to examine native plants as remedies, supplements or pharmaceutical agents. “While our research is still in the early stages, we’re optimistic that some of these 14 molecules could lead to new plant-based drugs or dietary supplements.”

Timmermann and her colleagues – Kindscher is a senior scientist at the Kansas Biological Survey, and Cohen is a surgical oncologist and translational clinician scientist at the University of Kansas Medical Center – describe the new withanolides in the November 2011 edition of the Journal of Natural Products. Additionally, their discovery is one of only 31 breakthrough technologies to earn a coveted presentation slot at the University Research & Entrepreneurship Symposium, a showcase of the nation’s most promising new university-based technologies for industry leaders, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, April 18 in Cambridge, Mass. The symposium is designed to develop financial or industrial partnerships to advance new technologies into the marketplace.

“It’s a big deal for us to be invited to this symposium,” said Timmermann, a renowned expert in pharmacognosy, the study of natural drugs. “We’re in an elite group.”

The wild tomatillo, whose formal scientific name is Physalis longifolia, is common in the Plains states and throughout North America. While researchers have studied other plants in the Physalis genus, the KU team is the first to examine the longifolia species as a source of potentially useful therapeutic compounds.

What inspired Timmermann and her colleagues to examine the wild tomatillo? It began with a bioprospecting project in South America in the late 1990s, when Timmermann discovered a plant with a compound that showed anti-cancer potential. Due to cost, distance, intellectual property issues and trade regulations, returning to South America to collect more of the plant wasn’t practical. So Timmermann teamed up with Kindscher to identify Midwestern plants that could have the same type of compounds as the South American plant.

“Our research led us to Physalis longifolia, which is a fairly common plant throughout the Midwest,” Timmermann said. “And from there, we discovered not only the molecule we were seeking, but also the 14 new compounds, most of which have turned out to be even more potent than the original one we were looking for. Discovery is a beautiful thing when it happens like that.”

In addition, Timmermann and Kindscher’s research indicates that the Pueblo Indians and other indigenous populations throughout North America used this and other species of wild tomatillo fruits as food, with no apparent ill effects.

“The anthropological record seems to show that the fruits of Physalis longifolia aren’t toxic,” Timmermann said.

So far, Cohen’s laboratory at KU Medical Center has demonstrated that these novel compounds have potent anticancer activity in melanomas, thyroid cancer, head and neck squamous cell cancer, breast cancer, glioblastoma brain tumors, and certain leukemias. These compounds can drastically shrink – or in some cases even completely dissolve – aggressive cancers in mouse models without any noticeable side effects or toxicity. In addition, other studies indicate these compounds may have anticancer activity against both esophageal cancers and pancreatic cancers.

The discovery is the latest to emerge from the Native Medicinal Plant Research Program, which was launched in 2009 with funding from Heartland Plant Innovations, a private organization that received startup funding through the Kansas Bioscience Authority. The program targets plants of the Great Plains used by Native American tribes and uses modern science to examine their chemical structures to discover the compounds responsible for their healing properties and determine which might have wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and even anti-cancer powers that could benefit human health.

“The Native Medicinal Plant Research Program epitomizes multidisciplinary collaboration by bringing together different KU departments,” Timmermann said. “For example, our Kansas Biological Survey has expertise in plant collection, ecological assessment and taxonomy. Our School of Pharmacy can isolate, chemically characterize and modify the to unravel their mechanism of action. And physician scientists such as Dr. Mark Cohen at KU Medical Center are investigating the compounds in animal cancer models. And of course, as a backdrop to all this, we have a world-class KU Cancer Center that recently submitted its application for National Cancer Institute designation. So it’s a great multidisciplinary effort.”

Regarding the 14 new compounds, Timmermann cautioned that it’s still early in the research process, and that even if the prove viable, the entire process from the lab bench to animal trials to human trials to regulatory approval could take a decade before they turn up in a supplement or pharmaceutical product. But she described the discovery as among the more exciting of her career – and it appears others agree, as evidenced by Cohen’s invitation to present the discovery at next month’s University Research & Entrepreneurship Symposium.

“For our discovery to be one of just 31 technologies to be presented in Cambridge is very exciting,” she said. “It speaks well of our work and, more broadly, of the interdisciplinary research being done at KU.”
